Headline has acquired This Is Why I Resist by activist Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu.
Commissioning editor Katie Packer acquired world rights from Cathryn Summerhayes at Curtis Brown. The title will be published on 21st January 2021.
This Is Why I Resist is a “declaration that the black identity will no longer be defined by perspectives forged from and rooted in white supremacy”. The publisher said Mos-Shogbamimu will “unequivocally and unapologetically” address the prevalence of anti-blackness and racism, digging down into its deep roots in the UK and the US, as well as looking at the social and political history of racism and how this impacts the personal lives of black people every day.
Packer said: “Dr Shola is an amazing speaker and activist and I knew she had to write a book as soon as I saw her on ‘This Morning’ criticising the relentless racist abuse of Meghan Markle. I’m incredibly excited to be publishing This Is Why I Resist, a book that is unapologetic in its approach to the insidious reality of white supremacy. Dr Shola is unafraid of having the most uncomfortable and difficult conversations because there’s no excuse for the lack of progress, white people have to step up and do the work because black people are done waiting.”
Mos-Shogbamimu commented: “Freedom is a struggle and black people are still fighting for the right to be judged by the content of our character and not the colour of our skin. There is no freedom without rights and no rights without the freedom to exercise those rights.”
