The biggest book party returns with a BANG!!!

Storymoja is pleased to announce the dates of the 2017 Storymoja Festival! After taking place in Accra, Ghana in 2016, the Storymoja Festival will return to Nairobi on the 27th of September to the 1st of October 2017.

In the past, the Storymoja Festival has been described as ‘the biggest book party’ in East Africa, and a ‘celebration of books, stories and culture’. The Storymoja Festival Team taking over the production of the festival is looking to reproduce the feeling of a grand book party, and a celebration of our stories and culture, and literature, on a grander and even more ambitious scale.

The theme of the 2017 Storymoja Festival is Black Peace. This theme is apt as it comes at a time when the entire world is concerned with the politics of identity. The 2017 Storymoja Festival will also fall exactly 10 years after the 2007/08 Post Election Violence, as well as on an election year in Kenya. It will be interesting to see how this theme will play out in conversations on writing, art, theatre, policy, business and identity throughout the festival.

The 2017 program will have a full offering of book discussions, public lectures, masterclasses & workshops, art & theatre shows, concerts, schools, and children’s and family programs encompassing a five-day program. Over the next few months, the guest headliners and participants, both local and international will be revealed on storymojafestival.com and across ts social media platforms.

It is also interesting to note that in 2017, the Storymoja Festival will officially turn 10 years old from the first time it appeared as the Nyama Choma Storymoja Reading Fiesta!

The Storymoja Festival Team:

  • Festival Producer: Anne Eboso Okongo is a Reading & Literacy Advocate, a Mandela Washington Fellow, the Founder and Producer of the Rusinga Cultural Festival and a former Coordinator of Start a Library. She brings her wealth of experience into the Storymoja Festival.
  • Program & Artist Coordinator: Magunga Williams is Co-founder & Manager of the Magunga Online Bookstore, and is a writer and blogger at The Magunga.
  • Storyhippo Producer (Children’s Program): Wangari Grace is a Storyteller and an Author of two children’s books. She has participated in numerous festivals as a festival guest and facilitator.
  • Communications Coordinator: Juliet Maruru is a writer, editor, Reading and Literacy Advocate, and a Lupus Awareness Advocate with She Blossoms.

It promises to be an incredible meeting of minds, a true celebration of culture, creativity and critical thinking, and I hope along with them that YOU will join us on this adventure!

To 2017!
